Meeting discipline is important because of its impact on productivity and respect. Disciplines you should enforce when chairing meetings include:
– setting the mood
– time-keeping
– preparedness
– attention
– listening to who is speaking
– being concise and to the point
– courtesy

RECOMMENDED EXERCISE

1. Think about the levels of discipline in meetings you have attended and meetings you have chaired in recent weeks. Which elements have been weak? (1 MC CPD Point)
2. Think about how to enforce the disciplines that are weakest in your next few meetings. What will you do differently? (1 MC CPD Point)
3. At your next meeting, focus on good discipline. Set out your expectations when you start the meeting, and monitor them throughout. If you need to, remind the group, to enforce discipline (2 MC CPD Points)
4. Review the outcomes of your next meeting. How successful were you in maintaining good meeting discipline? What areas worked well, and which were less effective? What will do differently next time? (2 MC CPD Points)
