🎬 Kim Cameron: Positive Organizational Scholarship https://youtu.be/N2QxvQ5t2Lo

Charles Handy has barely let up with a stream of new books with new and interesting ideas. Among them are ideas about which we also have full videos.

The Gods of Management
Handy perceived that organizational cultures can be classified into four broad types, according to how formal their structure is, and how centralised power is, within them. He drew the analogy with the characters of four of the Olympian gods, from Greek mythology.

The Shamrock Organization
In the The Age of Unreason (https://geni.us/jSOu), Handy gave an organizational model with three leaves. But now, four seems to be a fuller model:
• a professional core of managers, experts, vital administrative and support staff, and a minimum of specialists. They define the core competence of the business, and manage its infrastructure.

Everything else is provided by contracted workers:
• outsourced services from specialist providers
• contracted independent professionals with specialized skills
• a flexible, lower-paid workforce that can be brought in on short contracts and day-rates.

The Federal Organisation
In Handy’s Federal Organisation, we find a tiny core business, managing a large number of independent businesses, all of whom have complete autonomy to manage their affairs, and succeed on their own terms.

Do take a look at our video: https://youtu.be/69AYxCvT7m4

The Triple-I Company
The rise of software companies, web-based news aggregators, digital information providers, and the high-tech consultancies that serve them, offers ample evidence of the prescience of Handy’s third kind of new organization: one that capitalizes, above all, on:
• Intelligence – intellect
• Information – data
• Ideas – creativity

There is little in the world of modern organizational studies that Handy has not contributed to. Yet, astonishingly, his thinking spreads still further. All managers need to be aware of Charles Handy.

Take a look at the four videos that will give you the details of Charles Handy’s four models of organizations. Then assess how your organization compares to these models. Which type of structure do you think would best suit a successful organization in your industry sector? (4 MC CPD Points)
