LESSON NOTES
============
In the late 1980s, Handy recognized the concept of a portfolio career. This is a career with lots of components, rather than one single β€˜job’. It is a reality for many professionals.

What Handy foresaw (and embraced for himself) was the emergence of this lifestyle for white collar, knowledge workers.

This trend will enable what Handy describes as a Shamrock Company.

The Shamrock Organisation
With such flexible workers, Handy saw that organizations could no longer encompass all the functions they would need. In the β€˜The Age of Unreason’, Handy originally described three leaves of what he called a Shamrock Organization.

These three leaves surrounded a professional core of managers, technocrats, vital support staff, and a minimum of specialists. Together, they define the core competence of the business, and provide and manage its infrastructure.

This professional core sets a framework of strategy, operational processes, and decision-making, within which the rest of the organization works.

Everything else is provided by contracted workers:
1. outsourced services from specialist providers,
2. contracted independent professionals with highly specialized skills, and a
3. flexible, lower-paid workforce that can be brought in on short contracts and day-rates.

RECOMMENDED EXERCISE
In the 2020s, most organizations have something of the character of a Shamrock Organization. What elements (leaves of the shamrock) does your current organization make use of – and how? (3 MC CPD Points)
