1. High context (subtle, oblique, indirect suggestions) and Low context (direct, detailed statements).
2. Hierarchical (status and deference) and egalitarian (democratic and meritocratic)
3. Independent (separate issues and personalities) vs Interdependent (face-saving, harmony, dignity)
4. Co-operative (consensus-seeking) vs Competitive (comfortable with conflict)
5. Individualistic (seeking personal gain and fulfillment) vs Group-oriented (tribal and collaborative)
6. Tight time (clock watch, punctual) vs Loose time (relaxed, responsive)
7. Assertive (outgoing, informal) vs Private (reserved)
8. Merit (earned recognition) vs (standing (status linked to symbols, labels, and history)
9. Expressive (Emotional) vs Controlled (suppress emotions, come across as cold)
10. Pragmatic (choices, control, agency) vs Submissive (fate, destiny, relaxed)
RECOMMENDED EXERCISE
1. Think about each member of your team who comes from a culture that is in any way different from the prevailing culture of your team. Include yourself. For each one, inventory the 10 cross-cultural differences I discuss in the video. What do you learn? (6 MC CPD Points)
