LESSON NOTES
============
Norms are generally accepted patterns and standards of behavior within the team. They often take the form of un-stated, implicit rules – breaking of them incurs displeasure or even social sanction.
Value of Norms
• Efficiency – norms mean group knows what to expect and do in circumstances
• Group identification – maintains coherence of team
• Defines team’s relationship with wider organization and with other groups/teams
Norm Formation
Convergence – on average of individual preferences – often based on past experiences.
Norms become resistant to change – so it is important to get them right out the outset.
Leadership – to guide norm formation. Leader has role in:
• Modelling behaviors they want to see
• Setting expectations
What Norms cover

• How to ask for help

• Altruism/co-operation
