Get a Favor: How to Get Someone to Help you or Do You a Favor

We often need other people to do something for us. But we don’t necessarily have the authority to tell them to do it, or to ask them and expect them to comply. This is where influence is at a premium. You need to combine some long-term strategies with some shorter-term tactics. Let’s look at how you can ask for a favor and get the help you need.

1. Build up credit with me
2. Ask for a much smaller favour in advance
3. Give me notice so I can schedule it
4. Give me a reason
5. Be very precise in what you ask for
6. Pick your moment
7. Make it self-contained
8. Portray it as a continuation of something I’m already doing
9. Show me that you are also helping yourself
10. Let me know you are relying on me
11. Presuppose that I will say “yes”
12. Tell me what’s in it for me
