Eight Steps for Giving Feedback
Step 1. State the purpose of the meeting
Step 2. Describe what you have observed – give specific examples. As an alternative, you can ask them to share their own assessment.
Step 3. Describe the consequences of the continued behavior – the impact on them and on the organization
Step 4. Describe how you feel about this
Step 5. Listen to the other person’s perspective, ask as many questions as you need to understand it, and let them ask as many questions as they want to. Move into a conversation.
Step 6. Help them to decide on specific actions. Then help them turn it into a plan
Step 7. Summarize the conversation, acknowledge what you have achieved, and thank them for their participation
Step 8. Follow up
