LESSON NOTES

Listen between the lines – tone of voice, body language, gesture, expression
Acknowledge
Ask questions (probe & clarify)
Accept that it is what is observed
Avoid being defensive – and under no circumstances argue
Reflect before responding
Response – may include a plan
Say thank you – and mean it

– You may find what you hear surprising or even shocking
– You may be tempted to deny it
– You may get angry or upset
– You may try to justify, or rationalize, or argue away what you hear
These are why you need to take your time and respond by exploring what you have heard. Through this will come acceptance that it is feedback.

You may hear other feedback: it may confirm or conflict with what you have heard. Take time to build up a picture of people’s feedback, before acting to either reject or embrace it as a knee-jerk reaction.

RECOMMENDED EXERCISE
1. Next time you get feedback, be ready to receive it well, so you can get the best from it. (2 MC CPD Points)
