The key components of self-awareness are:
• Awareness of your own emotions
• Self-confidence
• A realistic self-assessment
• Knowing what you believe
• Knowing what your values are
• Knowing what you want from life

Our range of emotions is described well by the Plutchik Model. This illustrates 8 basic emotions: 4 positive and 4 negative. Each has different levels of intensity.

For self-awareness, you need to connect to your emotions, acknowledge and accept them without judging them, and so become comfortable with them. Just doing this can increase your sense of calm, and damp down the extremes of your emotional responses. From here, you can deliberately take a self-inventory.

Also pay attention to:
• How your energy levels vary throughout the day, with certain activities, and in the presence of different people
• Your style and approach to different interactions and situations
• The goals, prejudices, values, and beliefs you have, that influence your choices and confidence levels
• Where you are more or less confident

= = RECOMMENDED EXERCISE
1. Deliberately notice your emotional, mental, and physical responses throughout your day. Make time to reflect upon it at the end of each day. Do this for at least 2 weeks (4 MC CPD Points)
2. Better still, keep a journal. If you do, add 2 MC CPD Points
