Teamwork: Protecting Your Team

Protecting your team is a part of your role as a leader. To create teamwork, you need to serve your team, so they can get on with working together, as a team. and defending them from the things that will get in their way is part of that ‘service’.

LESSON NOTES
============
A servant leader has two primary roles:
1. Providing for their team (Rations)
2. Protecting their team (Raincoat)

The 5 main things you need to protect your team against are:

1. Distractions
Unnecessary and necessary admin burden
2. Interruptions
Colleagues making demands on their time
3. Conflict
Internal and external – conflict takes up time and saps energy and morale
4. Enquiries
People want someone to talk to – you do it. But do remember to give credit where it belongs
5. Poaching
The organization trying to lift people out of your team

RECOMMENDED EXERCISE
======================
1. What protection does your team need? Think about the protection your team needs – using the content of the video as a starting place. Develop your own checklist of things to defend them against that will make great teamwork as easy as possible for your team. (2 MC CPD Points)
2. Evaluate how well you are currently protecting your team, against your own checklist. Where can you improve team working by defending them better? (2 MC CPD Points)
3. Build a plan to provide better protection for your team, and evaluate its impact on their team working. (2 MC CPD Points)
4. Consider trying out the Red and Blue Badge system. How could it work in your team – either day-to-day or when your team is under pressure? (1 MC CPD Point)
