LESSON NOTES
What is the Feedback Sandwich?
Sandwich your negative feedback between two layers of positive feedback
Simple structure that can build confidence in a new manager

Why it goes wrong
We tend to remember the last thing we hear.
So, the bottom layer of the sandwich causes us to downplay – or even forget – the middle layer
Or, people get used to it and see the positives as the shiny wrapping to the bad news

How to make it work: The Feedback Burger
1. Things that went well
2. Things that could be improved
3. Emphasize your support for the person

RECOMMENDED EXERCISE
1. Next time you need to give formal performance feedback, use the feedback burger (2 MC CPD Points)
2. After using the feedback burger, evaluate how effective it has been (2 MC CPD Points)
