NLP Filters: How we Interpret the World around us

We don’t see the world as it is. We see it as our brains interpret it. We become aware of external events through our senses. NLP Filters give a compelling model of how we interpret the world around us and the way it influences communication. Watching this video is worth 3 Management Courses CPD Points*. 🔎 See below for details NLP This video is part of course module 2.9.1 Program 2: Manager as Communicator Course 9: NLP Section 1: Introduction to NLP Dr Mike Clayton has been an NLP Master Practitioner since 2003. Other videos in this section include: 🎬 What is NLP? Neuro Linguistic Programming https://youtu.be/F29MDTiwiTg 🎬 NLP Presuppositions: Explained! https://youtu.be/74SuciCkN-g 🎬 NLP's Logical Levels of Change: (aka Neurological Levels) https://youtu.be/DNIBBPQsZDk 🎬 The NLP Approach to Rapport Building https://youtu.be/mL4WbW4Ytjc LESSON NOTES We become aware of an external event through our senses. They feed signals to our brains, where we interpret the event. That interpretation is a result of the filters our brain applies to the signals our senses send. And these filters are a product of our assumptions, experiences, prejudices, beliefs, values, memories, knowledge, and culture. The Three Filters 1. Deletion 2. Distortion 3. Generalization Together, these filters transform the external (objective) event into a subject internal representation of it. It’s not the events that tell us what to think and feel. It’s our interpretations of them. So, our state of mind and our emotional responses are driven by the interpretations that our filters impose on us. This translates into our body language, or physiology. People will interpret that body language and think they know how we are feeling and maybe even what we are thinking. Your mental and emotional state puts signals out into the world. The other outcome of your mental and emotional state is that it drives your choices and your behaviors. And they, of course, determine your outcomes and the results you get in the world. RECOMMENDED EXERCISE 1. For one week, deliberately pay attention to what happens around you. What did you initially delete, which could provide useful knowledge? At the end of the week, reflect on what you learned. (2 MC CPD Points) 2. For one week, deliberately pay attention to what happens around you. What might you be distorting, which could be changing your interpretation of events? At the end of the week, reflect on what you learned. (2 MC CPD Points) 3. For one week, deliberately pay attention to what happens around you. What generalizations are you making, which can cause you to misinterpret events? At the end of the week, reflect on what you learned.
