If you do something really well, and get excellent results, then perhaps I can get the same results if I do what you do. So, I might ask you questions and observe how you behave. If I can figure out your formula and apply it, I can replicate your outcomes. That’s the principle of modelling in NLP.

LESSON NOTES
Much of NLP is based on modeling. And the principle is sound. The challenges are to:
• Gather enough data
• Sort out the salient from the irrelevant
• Replicate behaviors and attitudes closely enough
But even if we do this, can modeling achieve any results?
No. There are three factors in all human performance.
1. The learned behaviors
2. Genetics
3. Chance
Modeling can only help you with one. But, happily, many human skills that matter have a large component of learned behavior.
7 Steps
1. The first step is to find one or more (more is better) examples of people who excel at the thing you want to model
2. Next you need to set up meetings; ideally two types:
a. To observe them doing the thing
b. To ask them about doing the thing
3. Make detailed observations of what they do. Pay special attention to how they use their body – their postures, physiology, and movements. Also notice the things they say and how they say them. Record verbatim quotes. Document this all as thoroughly as you can.
A great tool to support yourself is the Perceptual Positions exercise I described in an earlier video. This can help you see the thing objectively (third position) and from your subject’s own point of view (second position).
4. Interview your subject. Elicit:
a. What they believe, their values regarding the thing, and their attitudes – why they do the things they do.
b. What they think they do and how they do it
c. Their mental strategies and models for what they are doing
d. Metaphors they use to describe what they do and how they do it
5. Organize your findings into a model
6. Experiment: test and refine your model
One of the most important things to find out is which elements are superfluous and do not contribute. For those that are salient, how do small alterations affect the results you get?
7. Design a way to train yourself and others to follow the model
