Critical Assessment of Emotional Intelligence: The Cases For and Against

Emotional Intelligence is an appealing model with a lot of ‘face validity’. That is, subjectively people see it as covering the concept it purports to measure. However, there is also a lot of academic criticism of the concept. So, in this video, we’ll take a look at some of the major points in the cases for and against Emotional Intelligence. I think the best assessment is that which Howard Gardner gave for his wider theory of Multiple Intelligences: ‘These intelligences are fictions – at most, useful fictions – for discussing processes and abilities that (like all of life) are continuous with one another.’ That is to say, Emotional Intelligence may not be a rigorous description of reality, but it is a useful model. = = RECOMMENDED EXERCISE 1.
