Elton Mayo and the Hawthorne Experiment: Process of Model of Motivation

Elton Mayo was a follower of Taylor. But, in a series of experiments at the Western Electric Company's Hawthorne plant in Chicago, Mayo found that workers are more motivated by emotional and social factors than by economic factors. This finding, and other, led over time to the foundation of a countervailing approach to Scientific Management: Humanistic Management. RECOMMENDED EXERCISE ====================== 1. As a manager, you can affect the conditions people work under and the incentives you offer them. These are the principles of scientific management. You can also decide how you engage with your people and the extent to which you show concern for them. This is a part of humanistic management. Examine your experiences as: - a worker - a manager Reflect on what your own experiences tell you about the effectiveness of the two approaches to management. Make notes in your journal, notebook, or workbook.
