Masters of Feedback: Ken Blanchard & Spencer Johnson - One Minute Feedback

The One Minute Manager, by Ken Blanchard and Spencer Johnson, is famous. And it spawned a whole series of One Minute Manager books. But, at the heart of the original book are three simple ideas. And they are all about giving one minute feedback. Check out the One Minute Manager book at https://geni.us/WGhddhr Watching this video is worth 1 Management Courses CPD Point*. 🔎 See below for details Feedback This video is part of course module number 3.8.4 Program 3: Managing & Leading Individuals Course 8: Feedback Section 4: Masters of Feedback Other videos in this section include: 🎬 Masters of Feedback: Rick Maurer https://youtu.be/w7DNsrJDEaE 🎬 Masters of Feedback: Kim Cameron https://youtu.be/bHn0Z_f0ZFs LESSON NOTES The three simple ideas at the heart of The One Minute Manager are: • 1-minute goal setting • 1-minute praisings • 1-minute reprimands Check out the One Minute Manager book at https://geni.us/WGhddhr Goals form the benchmark to measure performance against. Without clear goals, feedback can be arbitrary. The praisings or reprimands are simple forms of feedback. The Principles behind The One Minute Manager The main principle behind the book is that people who feel good about themselves produce good results. And your job as a manager is to help people reach their full potential. So, catch them doing something right. Another principle is that: Goals begin behaviors. Consequences maintain behaviors. One Minute Praisings The One Minute Praising reinforces behaviors that you want to encourage. They work well when you: 1. Tell people upfront that you are going to let them know how they are doing. 2. Praise people immediately. 3. Tell people what they did right—be specific. 4. Tell people how good you feel about what they did right, and how it helps the organization and the other people who work there. 5. Stop for a moment of silence to let them 'feel" how good you feel. 6. Encourage them to do more of the same. 7. Make it clear that you support their success in the organization. One Minute Reprimands The One Minute Reprimand lets people know that their behavior has not matched your ideal. A reprimand works well when you: 1. Tell people beforehand that you are going to let them know how they are doing and in no uncertain terms. The first half of the reprimand: 2. Reprimand people immediately. 3. Tell people what they did wrong – be specific 4. Tell people how you feel about what they did wrong – and in no uncertain terms. 5. Stop for a few seconds of uncomfortable silence to let them feel how you feel. The second half of the reprimand: 6. Let them know you are honestly on their side. 7. Remind them how much you value them. 8. Reaffirm that you think well of them but not of their performance in this situation. 9. Realize that when the reprimand is over, it’s over.
