Metaphors and analogies are reframes. And that means many stories are too. A joke is a reframe that is surprising and pleasing at the same time as being unexpected. And, many inventions take one object or idea and reframe it into a different context.
For our purpose, a reframe is a great way to help someone see something in different, more helpful way.
‘Some of my Team are performing badly and I’m feeling dreadful’
Reframes fall into two groups.
The first group reframe the content. That is, they take a new look at the substance of the experience.
The second group reframe the context. They accept the substance, but place it into a new context, where the implications of the content of the situation have a different meaning.
CONTENT
Reframe the significance again: but what aspects of those people’s work is going well?
Reframe with a metaphor: Developing a team is a bit like learning to cook…
Reframe the connection: do you need to feel dreadful just because some of your team are performing badly?
Reframe the assessment: How badly are they really doing
CONTEXT
Reframe the time perspective: it’s a stage all teams go through
Reframe the meaning: it just means you care about your work
Reframe the significance: But how I the team doing, as a whole?
Reframe the outcome: How can this be a learning experience for the team?
RECOMMENDED EXERCISE
1. As you hear people respond to events, practice reframing what they say - first to yourself, silently (2 MC CPD Points)
2. ...then, when the time is right, out loud (2 MC CPD Points)
